  17. <p>    The spirit of glasnost is infusing the Soviet press, and
  18. its new, muckraking style of journalism already has some
  19. officials up a tree. When the weekly Literaturnaya Gazeta
  20. published a report last year that meat producers were breaking
  21. the law by putting protein additives and other impurities in
  22. their sausage, the paper was promptly sued by a group of Moscow
  23. meatpackers, who demanded a retraction.

  25. <p>    LitGaz not only stood by the story but also took its case
  26. directly to a jury of sausage savants at the Fauna Cat Lovers
  27. Club in Dzerzhinsky, where the editors conducted a random taste
  28. test with some finicky felines. Last week, in an article titled
  29. "May the Cats Judge Us," the paper reported the results of its
  30. poll: out of 30 cats, only a two-month-old kitten named Mura
  31. would deign to dine on the suspect sausage. Asked the Gazeta:
  32. "All kitties, like Mura, must loyally love sausage. That's the
  33. way it's always been since man thought up sausage. But why, the
  34. devil take them, won't they eat it? And why do we continue to
  35. eat it?"
